The Gmail toolbar lets you take action on your messages. For example, you can use the buttons to delete a message or mark something as spam. The toolbar is located under the search box and above your messages.

Some buttons, like Archive, Spam, and Labels, only show up if you've selected or opened a message.

Change the button labels to text instead of icons

  1. Open Gmail.
  2. Click the gear in the top right.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Scroll down to the Button labels section (stay in the "General" tab).
  5. Select Text.
  6. Click Save Changes at the bottom of the page.
